Lener (indie pop, dream pop)
For fans of: Courtney Barnett, The Strokes, Brockhoff
The young singer Lener is celebrating her debut as a solo artist with the release of her EP “Please Don´t”. Once part of the band SweetLemon, Lener is now doing her own thing – and it sounds atmospheric: soft, almost trance-like vocals are accompanied by melodic bass lines and psychadelic synthesiser sounds.
Influenced early on by the music of her parents´ home, Lena Haslberger founded the band SweetLemon together with her sister Sophie Haslberger at the age of 12, which became famous thanks to the hit “Stand Up And Dance”, which has been streamed millions of times. In the spirit of do-it-yourself, the two recorded their first album at the age of 15 in a small studio between hop fields – with Sophie on vocals and Lener on guitar. During their time together, SweetLemon released two albums and played two tours. Lener and Sophie Haslberger also worked with Amy Whinehouse´s drummer and bassist. In 2016, the siblings were also awarded the Tassilo Prize by the SĂĽddeutsche Zeitung. At the beginning of their 20s, the “break-up” followed and the two sisters Lener and Sophie pursued their own musical style, which in Lener´s case sounds like this: dreamy indie pop that lulls the listener with psychedelic synthesiser sounds and at the same time inspires reflection with in-depth lyrics. Lener´s debut single “See Me Falling” was an airy, floating summer companion that gave a charming impression of the soundscapes Lener will conjure up with her EP “Please Don´t”.
Support: Daniel He
Daniel He sings of loss, identity, and life between worlds. In the spring of 2021, then 20-year-old architecture student Daniel He received a phone call from Wuhan. The news was a shock: his mother had passed away following a vascular rupture. Traveling to her funeral in Wuhan? Impossible – the world was still in the grip of the pandemic. A day after receiving the heartbreaking news, Daniel picked up his guitar and began writing songs: “Come on, let’s quit this silly game” – stop playing these games, this can’t be real. From that moment on, this theme would shape Daniel’s life. He read through his mother’s old diaries and realized just how similar they were. “I am undoubtedly her son,” he thought. Daniel writes in English – the language of his musical upbringing. From an early age, he had absorbed the sounds of Joni Mitchell and Elliott Smith. His quiet, open-tuned guitar songs are reminiscent of Nick Drake, with clear influences from the Anglophone music world – yet Daniel adds something entirely his own: a subtle, distinct Chinese note.
